Southwest Florida Museum of History
History buffs, or those who just want to take in the history and culture of the area, will want to add a stop at the museum. It’s located in the former Atlantic Coastline Railroad depot and boasts a number of exhibits dedicated to the state’s and region’s past. Learn about Seminoles and other Native American tribes, turn-of-the 20th century Florida, and the many industries in the area like agriculture, boating, fishing, and even the military. Make the second Thursday of each month part of your staycation and listen to a special guest speaker with a wealth of knowledge about the area. When you arrive, there’s a 1929 private Pullman rail car outside to greet you.
Sun Splash Family Water Park
You may head to the beach every day of your Cape Coral staycation, or you can choose to take a refreshing dip another way. The water park is open Memorial Day to Labor Day and is full of water fun like a kiddie area with slides and water play structure, and many little versions of the big slides in the park. Take a float down the lazy river or pack your visit with thrills on slides like “Terror Tube,” “Thunder Bump,” and “X-Cellerator.” Test your strength and agility on the “Sand Dollar Walk” – a ropes course over water or keep the thrills going on the drop slides that drop off just before you hit the water.
Beaches
You’ll want to make sure to visit the beach regularly on your Cape Coral staycation. Start your day with a walk or run on the beach or spread your beach blanket and plant your umbrella for a day of relaxation. You can splash around in the water for a swim, or go for a snorkel, stand up paddleboard, or kayak adventure. Up the adrenaline with parasailing, water skiing, or tubing, then wind up the day with a sunset walk on the beach.
Ford & Edison Winter Estates
The history doesn’t stop at the Southwest Florida Museum of History. The car magnet and famous inventor were friends who spent their days just a stone’s throw away from one another in Southwest Florida during the winter. Wander the 20-acre property. The Edison property features a main house, guest house, and caretaker’s house, and more, while the Ford estate features a main home and caretaker’s cottage. Get lost in the luscious gardens, or step into the Edison Botanic Research Laboratory – a place where Edison, Ford, and tire manufacturer Harvey Firestone worked to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign rubber sources. End your tour in the 15,000-square-foot museum featuring exhibits relating to Ford’s and Edison’s lives, including a 1916 Model T.
Fishing
Anglers of the group will want to take time to slow down and relax. Pack your fishing gear or make plans to join a fishing charter. Many companies in the area charter fishing adventures inshore, near shore, and out to the deep sea of the Gulf. Some may even point the boat toward calmer waters of bays, inlets, and feeder streams or creeks for some fly fishing. If you view fishing as a solo activity, rent some gear and ask the locals about the best places to cast a line. Make sure to secure a Florida fishing license before heading out.
Gator Mike’s Family Fun Park
Enjoy family fun indoors or outdoors at the same location on your Southwest Florida staycation. Gator Mike’s Family Fun Park includes outdoor attractions in Cape Coral like mini-golf, go-karts, a rope and zipline course, batting cages and more. Keep the fun indoors and visit the arcade, zombie-themed escape room, and a snack bar or bar & grill restaurant to satisfy the hunger brought on by all the activity.
Butterfly Estates
Learn about butterflies, what they do for the Florida ecosystem, and how to make sure they have the environment they need to thrive. The main attraction is the butterfly house, a 3,600-square-foot glass conservatory building that houses hundreds of butterflies as they are raised and released weekly. Learn about the life cycle of a butterfly and watch as they get released. The estates also offer gardening classes, highlighting the best plants to add to your garden to attract butterflies!
Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve
There are several preserves and protected lands around Southwest Florida. The areas are meant to preserve and protect the fragile Southwest Florida ecosystem, while also allowing residents and visitors alike to explore its natural beauty. Start your journey at the visitor center, where you can learn about the preserve, its ecological mission, and more. Then head outside to launch a kayak from one of the many launch points throughout the preserve and paddle your way through the area. Keep your feet on dry land and wander the 6,600’ nature trail and boardwalk that winds through the preserve or set up a picnic at any of the many picnic areas dotted throughout the preserve.
Tropical Breeze Fun Park
If you need a break from the beach, but still want to have fun outdoors, make sure the park is on your list of things to do. The park is home to one of the world’s longest mini-golf holes! Navigate the many twists and turns throughout the course and pass by water features including fountains and waterfalls as you work on your “short game.” After you’ve finished, trade in your putter and ball for a laser tag gun and take to the outdoor laser tag arena. Compete in a 30- or 60-minute game or take part in one of the many “mission” games including Infection, Defense, Freeze Tag, Capture the Flag, and more.
Water Sports
When you choose the Emerald Coast of Southwest Florida as your vacation destination, your plans will no doubt include plenty of time on the water. Rent a boat and cruise the Gulf or go wakeboarding, water skiing, or tubing. Rent a jet ski for some personal adrenaline-pumping water sports. Take the water adventures below the waves with guided SCUBA diving and snorkeling adventures, where you can swim and get up close to marine wildlife in its natural habitat. Make sure to have the proper Florida boating certification before renting a boat or jet ski.
