Location

The Fort Myers museum of history is located in the former Atlantic Coastline Railroad depot and is home to many exhibits relating to the state’s and region’s past. You know you’re in the right place when you see the 1929 private Pullman rail car outside!

Programs

On the second Thursday of each month, the Southwest Florida Historical Society holds a meeting with a guest speaker. There are a wide range of topics, but each one is relevant to the Southwest Florida area. There is a social/refreshment gathering at 6:30 p.m. before the event begins at 7 p.m. at the Southwest Florida Museum of History.

Exhibits

Take a trip through Southwest Florida’s past. Exhibits feature information about Paleo Indians, the Calusa, the Seminoles, Spanish explorers, and early settlers. Learn more about early civilizations in the area, the Fort, cattlemen, the goings-on at the turn of the 20thcentury, and industries like agriculture, boating, fishing, and the military.

Cracker House

Travel back in Southwest Florida’s past when you step into a replica “cracker” house. The simple wooden shelters were built by the early settlers of Florida and Georgia. The homes were easy and inexpensive to build, making them ideal for settlers lured to the area by cheap and plentiful land.
