Plan a Christmas getaway with loved ones this year that’s full of rest and relaxation, along with warm weather and beach fun. Florida is dotted with many beach towns that offer plenty of activities, attractions, and more, then spice it up with Christmas fun and flair. Pack your bags and point your compass to the one-of-a-kind Christmas in Cape Coral retreat.
Sightseeing
Pile in the rental vehicle and head out to see Cape Coral glowing in its holiday best. Aside from taking in the beautiful light displays, you can include some stops at some of the area’s most famous landmarks. The Cape Coral Museum of History hosts an array of exhibits about the area’s history and development. The grounds also host the Rosen Building, named for Jack and Leonard Rosen who founded and built the city. The Ford & Edison Winter Estates shows you how the two famous men spent their winters together. Other sights to add to your must-see list include the historic Sanibel Lighthouse and keeper’s quarters, Demere Key – an active archaeological site, and the old Lee County Courthouse. Many of these places have been added to the National Register of Historic Places over the years.
Christmas Dinner
For some, vacation means vacation from everything, including kitchen duties for the big feast. You can choose to prepare and serve the holiday feast yourself – the fully-equipped kitchen in your rental can handle it. Just visit a local grocery store for all the fixin’s. For those looking forward to total relaxation, including a break from meal prep, choose one of the many local restaurants providing the special meal. Some restaurants offer the meal alongside their regular menu, while others completely switch gears from their regular fare to the traditional dinner. For restaurants that don’t offer dine-in on Christmas Day, they may offer the feast on another day, or prepare the meal to go so all you have to do is pick it up and warm it at your rental!
Beaches
The water will be a bit on the cool side, but you’ll still want to spend plenty of time at the beach. Keep up on your exercise routine in anticipation of the big meal with a run on the beach. Fill a picnic basket with Christmas leftovers and spread a beach blanket for a day of relaxation and a picnic. Brave the water for a swim, or go on a snorkel, stand up paddleboard, or kayak adventure. Up the adrenaline with parasailing, jet skiing, or tubing, then end the day with a relaxing sunset walk on the beach.
Fishing
Anglers of the group will want to take time to slow down, cast a line, and relax this Christmas in Cape Coral. Pack your fishing gear or make plans to join a fishing charter. Many companies in the area charter fishing adventures in shore, near shore, and out to the deep sea of the Gulf. Some may even point the boat toward the calmer waters of bays, inlets, and feeder streams creeks, and other more serene settings. If fishing is a solo activity for you, rent some gear and ask the locals about the best fishing spots. Be sure to secure the proper Florida fishing license before heading out.
Ford & Edison Winter Estates
You may have come for their Historic Holiday Nights celebration, but don’t miss the rest! The car magnet and famous inventor were friends and spent their winter days just a stone’s throw away from one another in Southwest Florida. Wander the 20 acres that make up the two estates. The Edison property features a main house, guest house, caretaker’s house, and more. The Ford estate boasts a main home and caretaker’s cottage. Get lost in the luscious gardens full of color and scent, or step into the Edison Botanic Research Laboratory, where Edison, Ford, and tire manufacturer Harvey Firestone collaborated to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign rubber sources. Before you leave, tour through the 15,000-square-foot museum featuring exhibits relating to the famous men’s lives, like a 1916 Model T and many other exhibits.
Southwest Florida Museum of History
Visitors who want to take in the history and culture of the area this Christmas will want to add a stop at the museum. Located in the former Atlantic Coastline Railroad depot, it hosts a number of exhibits of the state’s and region’s past. Learn about Seminoles and other Native American tribes, turn-of-the 20th century Florida, and the many industries of the area, including agriculture, boating, fishing, and even the U.S. military. You’ll know you’re in the right place if you see the 1929 private Pullman rail car outside to greet you.
